Henna is drawn freehand, never traced. The paste is piped through a fine cone, which means the design develops as it goes and can be adapted to the shape of your hand rather than fitted to a stencil. Traditional mehndi patterns, lighter contemporary work, or something in between; we will sketch the direction with you before starting.
The paste we use is natural henna, mixed in-house from powder, lemon and essential oil. It is worth being direct about why that matters. So-called black henna contains a chemical dye called PPD, it is not henna at all, and it causes chemical burns and permanent scarring in a meaningful number of people. We do not use it and we would encourage you not to accept it anywhere else. Natural henna stains orange first and deepens to a red-brown over a day or two. Nothing safe stains black on contact.
How dark the stain goes depends on where it is and on you. Palms and the soles of the feet take the deepest colour because the skin is thickest there; the tops of hands and arms come out lighter. Body heat helps, so keeping your hands warm while the paste is on makes a visible difference. A good stain lasts roughly one to two weeks and fades gradually as the skin renews.
Timing is the thing people most often get wrong. The paste needs to stay on for at least four to six hours, and overnight is better, so plan the appointment for the day before the event rather than the morning of it. The colour also keeps deepening for about 48 hours after the paste comes off, which means the design looks its best on day two.
Sizing varies enormously, from a small motif to full hands and forearms, so henna is quoted per design. Send us a photo of what you have in mind and we will price it before you come in.

Traditional, contemporary or a mix, sized to the hand or the area you want covered.
Application
Piped freehand through a fine cone. Sit still, and give yourself longer than you think.
Drying
The paste sets in around twenty minutes but needs to stay on for hours to stain properly.
Removal
Scrape the dried paste off rather than washing it. Water at this stage costs you colour.
Afterwards
- Leave the paste on at least four to six hours, overnight if you can.
- Scrape it off dry. Do not wash it off.
- Keep the area away from water for the first 12 hours after removal.
- Rub in a little natural oil to protect the stain. Avoid soap and scrubbing.
- The colour keeps deepening for about 48 hours, so book the day before the event.
